Student Work

Overview:

This section will introduce students to basic animation techniques. Students will learn how to storyboard their ideas and turn them into finalized animations. The animation section will focus on using the classic flour sack animation to teach fundamental animation concepts, setting the stage for more complex projects.

Flour Sack Animation:

The flour sack animation is a foundational exercise in animation education, focusing on expressing emotion and movement through a simple, faceless object. The simplicity of the flour sack allows animators to concentrate on principles like squash and stretch, timing, anticipation, and staging without the distraction of complex character designs. This exercise is important because it translates directly into more complex animations, teaching the animator how to convey personality and emotion through body language alone. Historically, flour sack animations have been used as a training tool for animators to build a strong foundation in character animation and movement. Mastering this exercise provides a solid basis for animating more intricate characters in the future.

Instructions:

  1. Storyboarding:

    • Lecture: We will begin with a short lecture on storyboarding, covering what a storyboard is, why it's important, and how it serves as a blueprint for your animation.

    • Camera Shots and Movements: We will also discuss different types of camera shots and movements, which are crucial in setting the scene and guiding the audience's focus.

    • Animatics: Learn what an animatic is and see examples of animatics in action, showing how they serve as a rough version of the final animation, incorporating timing and movement.

    • Practice: Students will practice making their own storyboard for the upcoming flour sack animation.

  2. Background Art:

    • Learn how to take your storyboard and turn it into background art for your animation.

    • Understand the relationship between your characters and the environments they inhabit.

  3. Introduction to Animation Software:

    • We will introduce you to the basics of using animation software with a simple bouncing ball demo.

    • This exercise will help you understand timing, squash and stretch, and how to create a sense of weight in your animation.

  4. Keyframes, Extremes, Breakdowns, and Inbetweens:

    • We will go over the basic animation workflow, discussing the importance of keyframes (the major poses or moments in your animation) and extremes (the most stretched or squashed positions).

    • You'll learn how to create breakdowns and inbetweens to make your animation flow smoothly.

  5. Color Animation & Exporting as a GIF:

    • After completing the rough animation, we will cover how to add color to your animation. Learn techniques for coloring efficiently and making your animation visually appealing.

    • Finally, you will learn how to export your completed animation as a GIF file, ensuring it meets the necessary specifications for submission.
