Soulweaver
Soulweaver is my current independent game development project and the primary site of my ongoing creative and research practice. Conceived directly in response to the insights gained through earlier exploratory work, the project represents a deliberate shift toward focused, system-centered design and sustainable production methodology. Rather than beginning with isolated mechanics, Soulweaver was designed around a single unifying system that functions as both a gameplay foundation and an ideological framework.
At the core of Soulweaver is the tension between Binding and Unraveling, two opposing forces that shape the world, its inhabitants, and the player’s role within it. Binding represents justice, control, calculation, stillness, and calm. When taken to its extreme, it results in stagnation and lifeless order. Unraveling represents chaos, disorder, impulse, and instability. While it enables change and movement, unchecked Unraveling leads to destruction. The game’s central inquiry is not which force is inherently good or bad, but how imbalance emerges when either is pursued without restraint.
These forces are expressed mechanically through interconnected systems that respond to player action. Combat choices, creature interactions, abilities, and world states all influence the balance between Binding and Unraveling. Rather than relying on explicit moral choice prompts, Soulweaver emphasizes cumulative consequence, allowing meaning to emerge through play. The environment, creatures, and atmosphere respond dynamically to this balance, reinforcing the player’s impact through systemic and visual feedback.
From a creative research perspective, Soulweaver functions as a practice-based investigation into how ethical frameworks and emotional themes can be embedded directly within gameplay systems. The project explores player agency, control, and consequence through mechanics rather than exposition, using interactivity as the primary storytelling tool. This approach reflects a refined methodology that prioritizes cohesion between mechanics, narrative intent, and player experience.
The production process for Soulweaver has been intentionally structured to support focus and sustainability. The design document is concise and directive, with clear goals tied directly to the Binding and Unraveling system. Development efforts have prioritized delivering and refining the core experience rather than expanding feature sets prematurely. While additional mechanics and content are planned for future phases, the current scope emphasizes clarity, playability, and systemic integrity.
Recognizing the constraints of solo development, I have strategically sought external collaboration during early concept stages, particularly for visual development, allowing me to concentrate my efforts on systems design and implementation. Much of the game’s art remains in progress, reflecting an intentional sequencing of mechanics-first development rather than incompletion. This approach ensures that future visual refinement is grounded in a stable and meaningful gameplay foundation.
Soulweaver is being developed as an evolving project rather than a fixed or final product. Planned next steps include iterative updates to mechanics, continued playtesting, public demo releases, and the pursuit of external funding to support long-term development. As such, the project functions as a living research artifact, documenting the application of earlier findings while continuing to generate new insights through ongoing refinement.
The materials presented on this page document Soulweaver as an active and focused stage of inquiry within my creative and research practice. Together, these artifacts demonstrate how lessons learned through earlier exploratory work have been applied to produce a more intentional, cohesive, and sustainable approach to independent game development.
